Development of a Cell in Xenopus laevis

I am a new cell in the leg muscle of Xenopus laevis!

                    The model organism I have chosen to create this blog about is Xenopus laevis, the African clawed frog. A model organism is an organism belonging to a species that has been well studied so as to understand certain biological characteristics that are difficult to study in other species. Model organisms are easily bred, maintained and manipulated and so are easy to perform experiments on. The African clawed frog is considered a model organism because they produce robust embryos that can be studied and manipulated with ease (The Human Genome, 2012).

                    I am a newly originated cell, formed during the development of the embryo where mitosis occurs extensively. I am an exact copy of many other cells but soon I will differentiate into a unique cell via the switching on and off of genes specific to my function and location. In time, I will differentiate into a leg muscle cell in the organism via the activation of particular genes in my nucleus.

MuscleCell

                    Muscle cells consist of three different types and they are cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle and smooth muscle. I will become a skeletal muscle cell. Muscle cells differ from other cells in that they contain many more mitochondria than other cells. This is because ATP which is required for energy is synthesized in the mitochondria and since muscles perform much more work than other cells they usually require much more energy. They also myoglobin, which not only stores Oxygen, which is required for the formation of ATP, but also gives muscle its reddish colour(Ivy Rose, Structure of a Muscle Cell, 2013).
